How to choose a ChatGPT organiser extension
Updated 27 October 2026
There are dozens of Chrome extensions that add folders, search and export to ChatGPT, and a growing number that cover Claude and Gemini too. They all promise the same features on their store pages. This checklist covers what actually separates them. We make one of them, TidyTalk, so we've been explicit about where it falls short.
The short answer
- Check privacy first: where your chats are stored matters more than any feature.
- Match the apps you use: ChatGPT-only tools leave Claude and Gemini chats out.
- Test search on a real chat: titles-only search and full message search are very different products.
Do you need an extension at all?
Maybe not. If you only use ChatGPT and have a few dozen chats, its built-in tools are enough: projects, pins and archive for organising, and built-in search for finding. Extensions earn their place when you have hundreds of chats, use more than one AI, or keep losing answers inside long conversations.
The checklist
1. Where are your chats stored?
This is the most important question, and store pages often bury it. Your AI chats can contain work documents, code, health questions and personal messages. Look for:
- Local storage (in your browser) versus upload to the developer's servers. Local is safer by design.
- The Chrome Web Store privacy section. If it lists "personal communications" or "website content" being collected, read the privacy policy to find out why and where it goes.
- Sync. If the tool syncs across computers, is it end-to-end encrypted, and does it sync whole chats or just your folders?
2. Which AI apps does it cover?
Many tools are ChatGPT-only. If you also use Claude or Gemini, a ChatGPT-only organiser leaves part of your history out, and you end up with two systems. Some vendors sell each app as a separate add-on; check whether the price you see covers every app you use.
3. How deep is the search?
The difference between tools is bigger than store pages suggest:
- Titles only: barely better than ChatGPT's sidebar.
- Full message text: finds a word anywhere in any message.
- Opens at the message: takes you to the matching reply, not just the chat.
- Search by meaning: finds answers that used different words from your query.
Test it: search for a word you know appears only deep inside one long chat.
4. Real folders, or just labels?
Check for nested folders (subfolders), tags (one chat in several topics), drag and drop, and whether the folders live in the extension or try to rearrange the AI app's own sidebar. Extensions that modify the site's sidebar break more often when the site changes.
5. Export formats
Markdown (for notes apps and Git), PDF (to share), plain text and JSON (for scripts) cover most needs. Check which formats are free, and whether you can export many chats at once.
6. Pricing that matches how you'll use it
Common models are a monthly subscription, a yearly plan and a one-off lifetime price. Check what the free plan really includes; a free plan that can only search titles or export plain text is a trial in disguise. And check the refund policy.
7. Does it keep working?
AI sites change constantly, and extensions that read them break. Look at the "Updated" date on the store page, recent reviews, and whether the developer has a support address that answers.

Where TidyTalk falls short
So you can decide with the full picture:
- No Grok or Perplexity yet. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini only, for now.
- Older ChatGPT chats need a step. ChatGPT limits how fast chats can be read, so TidyTalk reads your last 30 days in full and lists older chats by title until you open them or import ChatGPT's data export.
- Chrome and Edge only. No Firefox or Safari version, and no phone app; it works where you use AI in a desktop browser.
- Young product. It launched in October 2026, so it has fewer reviews than long-established tools.
What it's built for: people who use more than one AI, want to find the exact message rather than the chat, and don't want their conversations on anyone else's server. Search across everything is free, so you can judge it on your own chats in a few minutes.
Questions
Are ChatGPT organiser extensions safe?
It depends on the extension. Prefer ones that store chats locally, request access only to the AI sites, and explain clearly in their privacy policy what leaves your computer. Check the Chrome Web Store privacy section before installing.
Will an extension break when ChatGPT updates?
Any extension that reads a website can break when the site changes. Well-maintained ones fix issues quickly; check the store page's last-updated date and recent reviews.
Do I need a different extension for Claude and Gemini?
Not necessarily. Some extensions cover several apps, either in one library or as separate paid modules. Check what the price covers.
Is a lifetime licence better than a subscription?
A lifetime price can be cheaper over several years if the product keeps working and stays maintained. A subscription costs more over time but is easier to stop. Look at the refund policy either way.
